Top Tips to Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing
We have seen a good number of frozen pipe incidents over the past 37 years. We got all of our technicians together to discuss the top tips to help prevent a frozen pipe from occurring in the first place. The first step is always prevention and keep these tips in mind when cold weather strikes.
Keep interior temperatures at 68 degrees or higher.
Ensuring an adequate temperature inside the home is key to preventing water from freezing within the water lines. Many times homeowners will turn down the heat when they are planning on leaving town for an extended period of time. We recommend that you keep your home at 68 degrees or higher at all times during the winter.
Weather seal your windows.
Drafts can be a major contributor to freezing water lines. As the temperatures plummet, drafts can accelerate the freezing process. At Bullseye Remodeling & Restoration, we recommend weather sealing your windows, to avoid unnecessary drafts entering into your home.
If applicable, heat your basement.
If you have a basement, make sure to keep it heated as well during the winter. Sometimes, pipes and waterlines are not insulated properly inside the basement due to old construction practices or unfinished areas. Directing heat to the basement via a space heater or through your central heating system will help prevent unexpected water line breaks.
Insulate unheated areas of the home and outside walls.
Unheated and uninsulated areas of the home are at a major risk of a water line freeze. Areas such as the garage, attic or basements are notorious for issues, so make sure you address these spaces before winter strikes. In addition to insulation, homeowners can have their pipes wrapped for additional freezing protection. Usually more cost effective than insulation, homeowners can find wrapping at their local hardware warehouse or find a contractor to assist at a reasonable rate.
Turn water faucets to a drip during sub-freezing temperatures.
When temperatures dip below freezing, turn your faucets on to a drip. Running a small amount of water through the pipes keeps the flow moving, and prevents areas from freezing through. This simple action alone can be enough to keep your pipes protected during a freeze. The small water bill addition is minor compared to the costs of restoring a burst water line.
