3 Steps to Take When Water Damage Strikes Your Property

When water damage strikes your property, it can be very easy to become overwhelmed. If not caught right away, thousands of gallons of water can infiltrate the wall cavities, insulation and drywall in mere minutes. If you experience a water damage loss- there are three distinct actions you need to take right away.

Step 1: Turn off the water shut-off valve.

The key to minimizing the water damage is to locate the water line and turn the valve off. This will at least stop more water from flowing into the affected areas. A water valve can be located in various locations on the property, including but not limited to the basement, crawl space or near the foundation wall in slab-on-grade construction situations. Typically a round wheel handle, turn the handle clockwise until the water to the properly shuts off. If you do not know where to locate your water valve, then now is the time to find out. Check your homeowner documents or speak with your property manager for to help locate the valve for help in future emergency situations.

Step 2: Call a certified restoration professional.

Once water has stopped flowing, immediately call a certified restoration professional. Bullseye Remodeling & Restoration is certified by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) as well as affiliated with several cleaning and restoration trade organizations. Choosing a certified professional is important because these companies understand the proper way to extract and restore affected areas from water damage. They follow a set standard to ensure area is treated quickly and effectively. When you call Bullseye Remodeling & Restoration, our friendly dispatchers will take your call no matter what time of the day. We will immediately send out a technician to survey the space and help develop a plan for restoration.

Step 3: Take inventory of the immediate damage.

While you are waiting for a technician to arrive, start taking photos and assessing the damage. Document as much of the loss as you can. Not only is this helpful for insurance reasons, but it will also help get a head start in recording any damage that has taken place. When the certified restoration professional arrives, they will be able to survey the areas of damage that have occurred behind the walls and not completely obvious at the on-set of the water loss. Make sure to combine your notes with the technicians, and develop a plan of action to restore the affected areas from the water damage.
